Every time I sit down to write a newsletter, the question hits me. "Does this matter?". With everything happening in the world, is there still space for art?

My hypothesis is YES.

Maybe that's why I always feel better afterward. So, thanks for allowing me to whisper in your inbox some creative energy.

Today I'm sharing a story about my latest mural, and the impactful partnership that led to it...​

Mural Magic in Mexico

At the end of 2024, Efdot Studio had the opportunity to collaborate with the wonderful non-profit, Maya Spirits, to create an experience at one of Mexico's largest music festivals: ZAMNA.

This new work titled "Reborn" captures the duality, fragility and interconnectedness of the jungle.

The color palette ended up getting inspired by my "Elements" series, which was created in 2022, not far from this same location.

About the cause:

​Maya Spirits works to preserve a large chunk of one of Earth's most important rainforests in Calakmul, Mexico, simultaneously supporting the local communities that live within.

During the music festival, attendees slowed down, engaged with the artwork, and learned about the initiatives at the heart of this project.

Process:

Every mural has different challenges. The sheer size of this wall, combined with the weather made the process take almost a full week to install.

We stayed on the festival grounds for that week and got fully immersed in nature.

Tools: For this mural we used good old house paint and brushes. Working on the iPad in tandem enabled me to switch and test colors as I was painting. This improvisation is one of the most satisfying parts.

I love remixing / digitally remastering my murals. This not only prolongs their lifetime by getting it out there on more walls, but it helps me explore new possibilities in my practice like animation and dynamic art.

"Reborn" will be available to the public on the Spring Solstice, March 20th with a pre-sale window on the 19th.

This artwork will be released this piece as a digitally animated edition that evolves over time. Yes, you read that right!

It will also be available as a print in my shop, starting at $99.

Maximum of 50 editions. 50% of proceeds will be donated directly to Maya Spirits to help them in their initiatives and efforts.
